Reflect, Reset and Transform your Life: Goal Setting That Actually Works

There is something about seasonal change that invites reflection.

As the days grow shorter, the air turns crisp, and the landscape quietly transforms into fall, many of us begin to feel the same pull inward — a desire to pause, reflect, and consider what we want our lives to look like in the season ahead.

If you’ve found yourself thinking “Something needs to change” — but you’re not quite sure what or how — you’re not alone.

This is where intentional goal setting becomes powerful.

Not the hustle-hard, pressure-filled version of goal setting — but a calm, thoughtful process that helps you move forward with clarity and purpose.

Why Goal Setting Often Feels Overwhelming

Most people don’t struggle with dreaming — they struggle with translation.

We know what we want in theory:

  • Less stress
  • More balance
  • Better finances
  • Improved health
  • Lose weight
  • Find a better job, one you actually like
  • A life that feels aligned instead of chaotic

We make lists of what we want, but what we don’t make a list of is what we need to do to make those things a reality. This can often leave us feeling:

  • Overwhelmed by where to start
  • Discouraged by how far away the goal feels
  • Unsure what steps actually matter
  • Disappointed when we abandon goals we didn’t achieve

Without a clear framework, goals stay vague — and vague goals are easy to abandon.

The Goal Map: A Simple Intentional Goal Setting Framework That Actually Works

The tool I use — and return to often — is a Goal Setting Roadmap, I developed that was inspired by a concept in Matthew Kelly’s book The Rhythm of Life. This tool help us write the list of what we want, and then map the steps we need to take to achieve them. This isn’t about perfection, it’s all about intentional progress and actionable steps.

What I love about this approach is its simplicity.

The Goal Map has three parts:

1. Define the Goal (That’s Right, Start With Column 3)

Get Specific.

Instead of: “I want to get better with money.”

Try: “I want to start paying off my credit card debt.”

Clarity creates momentum.

2. Identify Where You Are Right Now (Column 1)

This step requires honesty — without judgment.

Ask yourself, “What does my current reality look like?”

In our example above that may be “I have three credit card balances- $500, $1500, $5000”

This isn’t about shame. It’s about understanding your starting point. Don’t persecute yourself for where you are. Simply state the facts and start getting excited about who you are becoming!

3. Map the Steps Between Here and There (Column 2)

This is where goals become achievable.

Simply ask: What has to happen to get from Point A to Point B.

  • What is the next right step?
  • What needs to happen first?
  • What steps do I need to take to make my goal a reality?
  • What support or tools would help?

Small, consistent steps beat big, overwhelming plans every time. And they are much more sustainable!

A Real-Life Example

Let’s say your goal is financial clarity.

  • Goal: Feel organized and in control of my money (albeit vague, this may be a starting point if you are just starting out)
  • Current Reality: Bills feel scattered, know I need to save, but don’t have anything set aside, monthly bills feel inconsistent
  • Next Steps Might Include:
    • Creating a simple monthly budget
    • Tracking spending for one month
    • Open a savings account
    • Scheduling a monthly money check-in

Notice how the focus isn’t on doing everything — just the right things. And you also have a list of tasks to complete that will actually help you reach your goals. By simply creating a budget, your bills will no longer be scattered and while you might not be in a place financially to start saving yet, you will have the account when you are ready. These simple steps can help you begin to feel in control of your finances.

You Don’t Need to Do This Perfectly

Goal setting isn’t about rigid rules or constant productivity. It should be kind of fun, and create a sense of energy, hope, excitement, and momentum.

It’s about:

  • Noticing patterns
  • Making intentional adjustments
  • Creating systems that support your real life
  • Help you achieve your goals and promote growth

And for some of us, some seasons are all about growth. Other seasons are about rest, resetting and pivoting. There is no right or wrong way to set your goals.

Ready to Begin?

If you’re feeling the pull to reset, reflect, and move forward with intention, I invite you to start with the Goal Setting Roadmap.

Download it, grab a cup of coffee, find a beautiful and inspiring location, and give yourself permission to dream. Pro tip, consider a separate Goal Map for each of the areas you are focusing on to keep you focused and give you room to write your action steps. And remember, you can always do one or two goals each season, rather than a complete life overhaul January 1st (which ps- most people abandon by mid February, just saying).

Small clarity creates big change. Happy Dreaming!

Warmly,
Jenna
